INDEPENDENT WALKING HOLIDAYS THROUGH SOME OF NEW ZEALAND’S MOST SPECTACULAR LANDSCAPES
Great Walks are the Department of Conservation’s (DOC) premier walking tracks passing through some of New Zealand’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. DOC’s new independent walking packages are designed especially for visitors who want to spend less time planning and more time exploring!
GREAT UNGUIDED WALKING AND CANOEING / KAYAKING OPTIONS!
Independent walkers are unguided and carry all their own gear. Great Walks are on well graded tracks and easy to follow but walkers will need a reasonable standard of fitness to carry their pack over the climbs and descents of the beautiful rugged landscapes to each night’s accommodation. Those kayaking or canoeing should be comfortable paddling for a few hours a day.
INDEPENDENT WALKING PACKAGES INCLUDE:
• One night pre and post walk accommodation in comfortable 3 star accommodation
• Transport to and from the track
• Pre booked DOC Huts
• Trip Notes including contacts for gear hire
• Packages can be tailormade to suit your needs
ABOUT DOC’S ACCOMMODATION
DOC’s accommodation is communal with shared facilities. Walkers will need to carry all their own gear and equipment, food, cooking utensils and cook their own meals.
Huts have:
- Bunkrooms with communal sleeping arrangements
- Mattresses are provided on individual or platform bunks but no bedding or pillows are provided
- Toilet blocks have flush or vaulted toilets, hand basins (cold water only), but no showers.
- Communal kitchen and dining areas with tables and bench seats
- Cold running water and heating DOC rangers are present on the tracks and will be able to assist walkers with information about the track and the environment and help in emergencies.
