Rocky Mountaineer Train Journeys

The Rocky Mountaineer Train Journeys are rated as some of the best train journeys in the world – so you can expect truly spectacular scenery, food and service.

There are three great 2-day journeys:

    • First Passage to the West – Vancouver to Banff (Calgary)
    • Journey through the Clouds – Vancouver to Jasper (great for self drive or coach tour of the Rockies)
    • Rainforest to Gold Rush – Vancouver to Jasper via Whistler and Quesnel

The trains only travel through the daytime, so if you are going to Jasper or Banff then you will have an overnight in Kamloops or Quesnel at a hotel (included in the price of your train journey).  You get breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea on the train each day. Meals and drinks are served at your seat in Silver Leaf and in a dedicated lower level dining car below the upper level observation car in Gold Leaf. We’d recommend upgrading to Gold Leaf on the train as you will be seated high enough to be at, or above the trees that frequently line the tracks. You can choose from Gold or Silver Leaf hotels regardless of which service you enjoy on the train.

On arrival in Kamloops (or Quesnel) you get transferred by bus from the train to the hotel (5 mins) and you find your bags already there waiting for you in the hotel room (they go by road!). The hotels are quite simple for these overnight stops, but it all works very well.  You can dine at your leisure in any one of the many restaurants; Kamloops has a great “gastro-brewpub” for example. Alternatively, you can book a “dinner and show” experience.    Expect to have a very social time as you will make plenty of new friends with other passengers on the train.

They also do a day trip to Whistler – this is perfect if you are short of time.

There is a very detailed map provided so you know when you are approaching the particularly spectacular highlights and you get excellent commentary provided along the way. The train slows down whenever there is something particularly spectacular or bears/moose are spotted so that everyone has time to get their cameras out and get a photo or pop to the viewing platform.
