This 7-night single-centre holiday is based in Sarlat, which has the highest concentration of mediaeval, Renaissance and C17 facades of any town in France.

Sarlat (or Sarlat-la-Caneda) has the highest concentration of mediaeval, Renaissance and C17 facades of any town in France and its richly ornamented stone buildings are protected by law. You’ll feel like a time traveller as you wander the narrow streets peeping through archways into ancient courtyards as the centre of the old town has impeccably restored buildings and is mostly car-free. Places to visit include the large Benedictine Abbey, the cathedral and the hubbub of Sarlat’s famous traditional local market (on Saturdays).

    DAY 1 Arrive in Sarlat
Arrive at the charming 3* Hotel Meysset. Enjoy a 7-night stay at this relaxing property with its heated swimming pool, sun terrace, 1.3 hectares of parkland, bar and restaurant. Explore the nearby mediaeval town of Sarlat, which has the highest concentration of mediaeval, Renaissance and C17 facades of any town in France, restored to its former glory in the 60s by the enthusiasm of writer, resistance fighter and politician Andre Malraux. (D)

DAY 2 Les Eyzis and the ‘Gorge D’enfer’ Walk
Les Eyzies is known as France’s capital of Prehistory for good reason. This lovely gentle stroll enables you to combine a walk with exploring the village and visiting any number of the dozen or so prehistoric and troglodyte settlements and museums in the area. (B, D)

    DAY 3 Eyrignac Loop Cycle
Head out to the east of Sarlat towards Sainte Nathalene before continuing up to the delightful manor house and French gardens at Eyrignac, which boast as some of the best in France. (B, D)

DAY 4 Lascaux and Montignac Walk
A great day out and an itinerary combining a visit to world-famous Lascaux (allow a couple of hours) with a walk into the hills above Montignac for a good view over the Vezere Valley and the village. You pass the pre-historic site and museum of Regourdou along the way. (B, D)

DAY 5 Greenway Loop to Carsac-Aillac and Carlux Cycle
Head down from Sarlat to Carsac-Aillac and the Dordogne River beyond. Cycle along the Greenway (Voie Verte) to Rouffillac and continue on to Carlux. Pedal down through orchards, agricultural land and local hamlets to the valley floor and Sainte Nathalene, then back to Sarlat. (B, D)

    DAY 6 Beynac Loop Walk
Rather than simply driving straight to the Chateau de Beynac, this easy walk follows back lanes and trails on a short loop through the countryside to the north of the village. It offers some great and varied views and then takes you right to the front door of the chateau on a ‘secret’ path. (B, D)

DAY 7 Rocamadour, The Alzou & Ouysse Valleys Walk
Set off from the chateau via the iconic viewpoint over Rocamadour and descend along the main street to the Moulin de Roquefraiche. Stroll along the Alzou Valley to the impressive resurgence of the River Ouysse at the Gouffre de Cabouy, a very picturesque riverside picnic spot. (B, D)
