New South African Visa Requirements for NZ Passport Holders

    UPDATE 05 AUG 2019

We are very pleased to advise that effective from 15 August 2019, New Zealand passport-holders will no longer need a visa to enter South Africa for holiday purposes and business visits, for a period up to 90 days!

    UPDATE 27 SEP 2017

We has been informed of an easement in the South African visa application process, meaning it is now possible to have a nominated person lodge the application in person with VFS Global in Auckland or Wellington on your behalf.  Clients wishing to do this must write a letter of authority giving their nominated person permission to submit an application on their behalf, and state the reason why they are unable to attend the appointment themselves.  The nominated person could be a friend, family member or travel agent, and that person must lodge the application in person.  There is still no facility for applications via email, courier or mail.

Effective 16 January 2017, all New Zealand passport holders require a visa when travelling to South Africa.  Visas (Single & Multi-Entry) must be applied for at VFS Global’s office’s in Wellington or Auckland – this is a company contracted to the South African Government to accept South African visa applications. Phone contact is  09 363 9616 or [email protected]

    • There is a lengthy list of requirements for a tourist visa application – listed here.
    • Processing time is 5 to 7 working days from receipt of application if application is complete, but due to the current back log at South African High Commission, processing time may take 15-20 working days. Apply no more 90 days prior to entry. The visa cost is NZD$95 plus VFS Global’s $86 processing fee, per person.
    • New Zealand passport holders do not need to apply for a Transit Visa if transiting through OR Tambo International Airport, Lanseria, Cape Town or King Shaka airports and if not clearing immigration or customs. New Zealand passport holders will require a Transit Visa if transiting through any other South African Port/Border Post.
